From the [N.Y.] Commercial Advertiser of Monday.
MURDER AND SUICIDE.
A colored man named D. Philips, a jour-neyman barber, residing at 72 Centre st. next door to the corner of Walker street, cut his wife’s throat with a razor, at about 3 o’clock this morning, in such a manner as to cause her instantaneous death.
He next attempted to make away with his child, but his mother-in-law, who heard the noise occasioned by the commission of the homicide, came into the room, rescued the infant from the murderer’s grasp, and es-caped with it to a place of safety.
Finding himself foiled in his second dia-bolical attempt, the murderer completed the catalogue of his crimes by cutting his own throat. He was removed to the hospital, where he died shortly afterward.
