In this indenture, Jean Baptiste Abraham Barbanson (described as a young man of color of 16 years of age from Saint Domingue) is sponsored by his godmother, Marie Catherine Galbois as an apprentice to Gillet & Bourgeace to learn to be a blacksmith. In French. Indentures in which at least one party was a free person of color were selected from among all of the indentures available. This identification was made either by the designation of an individual as a free person of color in the record or when a phenotypical description like "quadroon," "mulatto," or "Negro" was given and there was no information to indicate the person was enslaved.
