In this indenture, Joseph St. Amant (described as a free child of color of 15 years of age and a Creole of Louisiana) is sponsored by his mother, Azelie Lavigne (described as a free woman of color), as an apprentice to Joseph St. Amant (described as a free person of color) to learn to be a blacksmith. In French.</br></br>Indentures in which at least one party was a free person of color were selected from among all of the indentures available.
