In this indenture, Jean Baptiste Clavet (described as a free negro of about 15 years of age) is sponsored by father, Pierre Clavet (described as a free negro man), as an apprentice to Nicholas Murray to learn to be a blacksmith.</br></br>Indentures in which at least one party was a free person of color were selected from among all of the indentures available. This identification was made either by the designation of an individual as a free person of color in the record or when a phenotypical description like "quadroon," "mulatto," or "Negro" was given and there was no information to indicate the person was enslaved.
