In this indenture, Louis (described as a negro slave of about 11 years of age) is sponsored by Joseph Pietro (described as a free negro) as an apprentice to Louis Gilles to learn to be a blacksmith. In French.</br></br>Indentures in which at least one party was a free person of color were selected from among all of the indentures available. This identification was made either by the designation of an individual as a free person of color in the record or when a phenotypical description like "quadroon," "mulatto," or "Negro" was given and there was no information to indicate the person was enslaved.
