Twenty Dollars Reward.
RAN AWAY from the subscriber, last night, a Mulatto Man named GEORGE STOKES, alias Stalks, or Stops; about 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, has thick lips, a bad countenance, and remarkably well limbed; had on a light-coloured coat, an under jacket, buckskin breeches, white linen shirt; but has a variety of clothes, among which are several coats, a buff waistcoat and breeches, and an oiled leather hat, &c. He is accustomed to wait on gentlemen, and is an artful fellow; his left eye-brow has been lately clipped with scissars, his hair cut close, and has the marks of a whipping on his back, for gross misbehaviour. He was formerly the property of Mr. James Armstrong, and used to drive a dray in this Town. He was sold at vendue, and purchased by Richard Curson, Esq; who sold him to the subscriber. He says he is subject to fits, which is supposed to be the effect of liquor, of which he is extremely fond. His mother-in-law Gin Turner, has been seen lately to wear his leather hat, and her son Tom Turner, was in Town about four days ago. It is likely they have conveyed the clothes of said runaway near the seat of Captain James Disney, or the quarter of Mr. John Weems, or a Mr. Normond’s in Ann-Arundel County. His wife lives with Miss Nancy Young, and it is probable he is skulking about Town.
Likewise ran away from the subscriber, on Sunday the 12th of October, 1788, a Negro Servant Man, named JAMES FOX, alias Jim Goose, a likely country-born fellow, about 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, 25 or 26 years old, speaks good English, and with great plausibility; his former master was Isaac Webster, Esq; of Harford County; he had on when he went away, a white linen shirt and waistcoat, linen trousers, with shoes and stockings; his other apparel cannot be ascertained. He lately acted as miller, under Mr. Wilson, at Captain Van Bibber’s mill, near this Town, and was taken on the second instant but made his escape at the mill run.
Whoever secures saidrunaways, so that I get them again, shall have, if taken in this Town or County, Six Dollars for each, and if at a greater distance, Ten Dollars for each or either of them, with reasonable charges if brought home, paid by
CHRISTOPHER HUGHES.
